January 2016: Influence of obesity on trivalent influenza vaccination

Obesity is not only a general health risk factor but is also known to increase health risks resulting from certain infections of respiratory pathogens. Trivalent influenza vaccine was tested in obese children as they represent a possible risk group. The publication by Esposito et al. ‘Immunogenicity, safety and tolerability of inactivated trivalent influenza vaccine in overweight and obese children.’ surprisingly shows a similar or slightly higher antibody response of obese children to the trivalent influenza vaccine and can be seen as an argument to include all children, including obese, in influenza vaccination programs.
