Professor Sarah Gilbert
Professor of Vaccinology, head of human influenza vaccine programme, Jenner Institute, University of Oxford, UK
Since joining the University of Oxford more than 20 years ago to work with Professor Adrian Hill on the genetics of host/parasite interactions in malaria, Sarah Gilbert became interested in the ability to induce T cell responses by vaccination. This led to research on the use of viral vectored vaccines, from design, through pre-clinical studies, cGMP manufacturing and clinical studies. She then began to work on the boosting of T cell responses to protect against influenza infection and produced a vaccine which demonstrated efficacy in a phase II influenza challenge study. A second vaccine is also in clinical studies, and in further research Sarah is developing vaccines that induce both T and B cell responses to influenza.
